Eco Factor: Portable laboratory to test algae strains for bio-fuel.
The latest developments in bio-fuel generation has allowed scientists to produce bio-fuel from something as common as algae. However, the research to find the most productive strains of algae that should be used to produce bio-diesel is monumental as scientists have to find the best out of the millions of algae strains present in the world. To ease the task, designers at FutureFarmers and the Biological Sciences Team at the National Renewable Energy Lab have come up with prototype portable laboratory known as Lunchbox Laboratory.

The prototype system could be potentially distributed among schools where young scientists could do primary screening of a collection of algae strains. During this screening, all the non-productive strains would be ruled out and the best would reach better labs. The project will enable young students to participate in a global cause that could end the energy crisis forever.
