All electronics giants are planning to go green and offer green products. The same trend has continued at Western Digital. The company is now offering a new range of HDDs dubbed GreenPower.
GreenPower not only focuses on enhanced storage area but also on efficiency. Western Digital claims that these new hard drives consume up to 40% less power than any of its rival HDDs.
The 3.5-inch SATA HDDs are in stores and boast of storage area in between 320GB to 1TB. They also claim that using this HDD is equivalent to taking your car off road for a period of 14 days in an year or in more financial terms the net profit of using these drives is about $10 per year.
These drives host some outstanding features to reduce energy utilization that include:
• IntelliPower: This is a fine tuned balance between the spin speed, transfer rate and cache size.
• IntelliSeek: Calculates the optimum seek speed to lower the power consumption once the disk is in use.
• IntelliPark: This mechanism automatically lowers the power consumption by parking the heads when the disk is idle to reduce aerodynamic drag.
• PMR: Perpendicular magnetic recording is a mechanism to achieve even greater areal density.
