Jim Harris, a managing partner for the recently launched Cleantech Innovation Institute said that largest contributors to the smog are the 196,000 taxis (driving at an average of 10x than regular passwenger cars) in North America only. In terms of fuel saving, the conversion of taxis into hybrids would help cab drivers save an average of $1,200 to $1,500 per month on fuel.

The institute is holding talks with Toyota and the mayors of four cities, San Francisco, New York, London, and Toronto to move over to hybrids in those cities.
