When you nudge yourself to think out-of-the-box and the improbable, you can dole out some ingenious ideas to make life simpler and easier. You don’t always need to be a highly qualified individual to make a difference. Need those kinda instincts just like Mansukhbhai Prajapati, from Rajkot in India! Residing in Gujarat and a potter by profession, he spends hours every day modeling new and innovative ideas. And the best result of his recent efforts is this Mitticool - A fridge made of clay! Touted as mud fridge, it has two large water tanks at the top and bottom that cool the sides. Akin to the clay pots, or ‘matkas’ that keep water cool in summer, Mitticool can lower the temperature by about 8 degrees Celsius in comparison to the room temperature. The USP of Mitticool lies in the quality and density of mud used which ensures that everything kept inside is protected from the heat outside.
The upper portion of the refrigerator can store about 20 liters of water, while the bottom cabinet has separate space for storing fruits, vegetables and milk. The natural cooling process inside the refrigerator can keep vegetables and fruits fresh for around 5 days, while milk can be preserved for 3 days.
This guy was inspired by a caption that said that ‘the earthquake did not even spare the poor man’s fridge’ during the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat. The use of the word fridge made him think and that’s when he thought of making an affordable eco-friendly fridge for the common man.It is rightly said that Necessity is the mother of invention!
The Mitticool takes about eight days to get ready. Priced between $58 - $80 (INR 2500 to 3500), it’s a cheap and an eco-friendly alternative to the conventional fridge.
Who wouldn’t want a fridge that is low on maintenance, doesn’t hike your electricity bills and at the same time keeps your food fresh and also preserves its natural flavors?
