
The plastic which we generally use are petroleum-based and are all meant to head for the landfill. Bio-based alternatives have crept up into products, catapulting it onto headlines. Dupont and the other major corporate players hope to turn this tide. Besides devising carpet ingredients and large-scale ethanol production, they’ve started working on a few concepts that at least sound more interesting.
Corn-based (PLA) bioplastics, as efficient alternatives are making their way into water bottles and disposable cutlery, ‘although - at least for now’ (as Dawn Danby has rightly commented) - the waste rarely makes it back into the soil.
