A genius idea by a student of Arizona State University might just revolutionalise the way we perceive wind energy to be produced.
No need for vast wind fields, wind energy can be generated on something as simple as the highway signage poles!
Proposed on a busy highway system near Phoenix this connects 515 square miles of the Sonoran desert. The design will fit on the horizontal steel tube along with the highway signage, like a parasite catalyst.
Shaped like an axis, the wind turbines would be powered by the whooshing of the wind caused by the passing vehicles rushing at the average speed of 70 mph.
Each single wind turbine will be able to produce 9.600 Kwh of energy, annually even if the average wind speeds is kept at a minimum of10 mph. This energy is sufficient to light up a 700 sq ft apartment.
The power production estimated right now is being kept low, but it is expected to increase many folds as the vehicles would create average annual wind speeds much beyond the baseline of 10 mph.
The power produced by the wind is to be used for various purposes including lighting and shading the Grand Canal, Piestewa Parkway (State route 51), and Osborn road, there by making it a hub for community in night and day.
This is more than just a piece of imagination from a student’s mind. If the project gets recognized, we could soon see axis rotating on wide signage on freeway!

Yhea, there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. Energy has to come from somewhere. So if you put a windmill near a highway like this, sure you’ll capture energy from the wind produced by the cars, but the cars will need to work harder going by these things due to the added wind resistance.
How the fuck is there gonna be extra wind resistance? The cars are already making the wind, whether there’s a turbine or not. Only difference is we weren’t using it before, but now we will...
There will be wind resistance created by the turbine, genius.
I’m also an ASU student and this is the first I’ve heard of this.
first- ”shaped like an axis” doesn’t mean anything. (helix)
Second- No mention about how long the apartment would be lit...
9.6kwh will power a typical computer for about 30-40 hrs. This says it will take 1 yr to make that much electricity. The cost will never be justified. Wind speed at the height required to allow semi trucks underneath will never hit 70mph. You’d get more out of the wind over the freeway than from the cars.
US have for saving energy. Requires enough speed for to make it spin. About 100 mph above.
SIR
I AGREE WITH YOUR IDEA
I WANT TO GIVE MY IDEA ALSO

SIR
LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF. I AM P. SUBRAMANNYA BHAT AGED 53 YRS WORKING AS MANAGER IN INDIAN BANK
PULIAKULAM BRANCH COIMBATORE TAMILNAD INDIA.
I AM A COMMERCE GRADUATE AGED 53 YRS AND WORKING IN THE BANK FOR THE LAST 34 YEARS . I WANT TO BE OF SOME HELP
TO COUNTRY IN PARTICULAR AND THE WORLD IN GENERAL.
NOW THE TALK OF THE TOWN IS USING WIND AND SOLAR ENERGIES. HERE I WANT TO OFFER MY SUGGESTION.
PLEASE HELP ME IN IMPLEMENTING THE SAME .
CARS AND OTHER VEHICLES ARE TO BE FITTED WITH SOLAR FILMS , FANS AND WATER ROTATORS.
FOR THE BEGINNING, THE VEHICLES ARE RUN BY DIESEL/ PETROL. AFTERWARDS WHILE MOVING THROUGH,
WIND ENERGY BATTERIES WILL BE CHARGED/RECHARGED. WITH SUNLIGHT SOLAR BATTERIES ARE RECHARGED.
WITH THE HELP OF THESE, WATER ROTATORS GENERATE ELECTRICITY WHICH IS AGAIN STORED.
ALL THESE THREE ENERGIES ARE STORED EITHER IN ONE BATTERY OR DIFFERENT BATTERIES AND ARE TO BE USED
FOR RUNNING THE VEHICLES.
THIS IS MY BASIC IDEA . THE SAME CAN BE IMPROVED UPON BY THE ENGINEERING STUDENTS/ RESEARCHERS AND
COMMERCIALLY USED. WITH THIS IN MY OPINION, COST OF RUNNING WILL BE LESS THAN 10 PAISE PER KM, AS THE
SOLAR AND WIND WILL BE AVAILABLE ALMOST ALL THE TIME FREE OF COST.
HOPE SOMEBODY WILL TAKE THIS AS A CHALLENGE AND HELP THE MANKIND AND GIVE SOME CREDIT OF THEIR
ACHIEVEMENT TO ME ALSO

Interesting. Too bad about the Google ads that lead into the story. Almost made me miss the point. This page is so busy with stuff; it’s not very appealing and distracts from the possible benefit of this good idea. I’m so sick of people trying to sell me stuff and making a living off of my hide. If there’s any real revolution it isn’t going go come from technology alone; we’ll only find salvation and everlasting life on this earth if we can free ourselves from unnecessary consumption, and personally I have my doubts.

wuzzup peeps just wanna let u know what im think bout this stuff here i think this is very good idear ya know what im sayin dawg! i luv da environment and annamils. day r da bomb.com 4 sho ya know i am an all natural person i luv hollister and guys and girls and people that are cooollliiiioo ya know what im sayin dddawg diggity dawg
How many kilowatthours can I produce if I only eat baked beans and had a hose up my butt?
Sorry but the average car isn’t going to move that turbine at all. There just isn’t enough wind to catch from that distance. The turbine would have to be a few feet away instead of several.
Semi trucks would work ok though. Sorry, but this idea will not work. More design and a better deployment strategy is needed.
@ JL Kyd ... gimmee a break. Those ads pay the bills to make this material available for ’free’.
In fact, if you REALLY thought that the guy had a decent web site, you’d click on an ad on your way out.
The internet is not, contrary to popular opinion, free. Every byte and pixel costs and those ads are his way of recouping his expenses and maybe, just maybe, snagging some pizza money.
