Most of us like to do our small bits for our beloved planet. Some do a little more. And some, like Toni Vernelli, is happy to give her all, even her Motherhood, to save the world! Unbelievable though it may sound, vegetarian since the age of 15 and passionate about the environment, Toni had always been determined never to have a child, as, according to her, it would only mean selfishly adding to the problems of food, water, land, fuel, toxic waste and over-population that the world is plagued with.

By sheer luck, she found a like-minded partner in her first husband. She decided to stop taking pills sterilize herself at the age of 21. Her doctor refused downright but allowed her husband to go ahead with vasectomy. However, when Tony was 23, the marriage fell apart. At the age of 25, after aborting her boyfriend’s baby, Tony was determined to ensure that such an “accident” never happens again. At the age of 27, Tony’s dream of not adding to the burden of the world was realized in Brighton. She was sterilized. She got full moral support from her proud mother. Ed, her future husband, who shares her views, gave her a card saying “congratulations” on the morning of the surgery.

Toni is not the only one, Sarah Irving has been through several broken relationships because her boyfriends wouldn’t give up fatherhood for the sake of the planet. Sarah started work for the Ethical Consumer magazine, and seven years ago she met her fiancČ Mark Hudson, a 37-year- old health- care worker, who shared the same ideas about the environment and children. They considered it safer for Marc to have vasectomy than she being sterilized and went ahead with it. Moreover, they don’t have a car, cycle everywhere, and never fly. They recycle, use low-energy light bulbs and eat only organic, locally produced food.

These women may have deprived themselves of the pleasure of loving and nurturing an innocent baby, but they bask in the glory of doing their bit for the planet.
