Breaking its own record of 54 hours, the Zephyr is soaring newer heights with its latest world record of flying for more than 82 hours, 37 minutes. This is a ground-breaking achievement in the world of eco-flying as this solar powered, unmanned aircraft is intended to carry out research work about earth observations and communications relay with persistence. At 30 kg, it is ultra light and is crafted out of carbon fiber sporting a wingspan of 18 meters. Controlled by a remote up to 60,000 feet, it then switches to autopilot mode via satellite communication. During the day, the plane draws on power supplied by paper-thin amorphous silicon solar arrays, mounted on its wings, while simultaneously charging batteries used for night operations.
The latest unofficial world endurance record flight was a demonstration for the US military, which is looking for new types of technology to support its troops on the ground.
The trial, which took place between July 28 and 31, also included the participation of the UK Ministry of Defence.

Amazing isn’t it! Flying only on solar power for 82 hours. It sure brings about lots of possibilities.
Wonder if in future we will have passenger planes flying w/o jet fuels... Who knows, it might just happen :)
It definitely will happen.....someday :)With so many eco-designers out there striving to make this world greener, it wont be long before we see such a concept too.
And IF that happens, can you imagine how cheap flying will become??? No high costing jet fuel. Just one time cost (may be higher) of making the plane with solar panels and flying is virtually free and pollution free!!!! Too good to be true :)
